Bitwarden: The Best Free Password Manager

Bitwarden is an open-source password manager with a genuinely usable free tier and an audited, transparent codebase.

What it is

Bitwarden stores passwords, passkeys and 2FA codes in an end-to-end encrypted vault that syncs across unlimited devices on the free plan. The clients and server are open-source and independently audited.

A paid Premium tier (around $10/year) adds encrypted file attachments and advanced 2FA, and Families/Business plans add sharing -- but the free tier is fully functional for one person.

What you get for free

Free tier: unlimited passwords, unlimited devices, secure sharing with one other user. Premium is optional and cheap.

Who it is for

Privacy-conscious users who want a manager they can audit or self-host.

Our take

The free tier alone beats most paid competitors. We rank it first; the Premium upgrade is worth it but never required.
